River Rock Lodge

American Lodge With An Aussie Twist

It’s always relaxing hanging out in a lodge. But it’s not always relaxing driving the three or four hours it takes to get to one. So it’s nice to know that on the northern edge of the Twin Cities is a lodge that may not offer rustic sleeping quarters (although it’s attached to a Country Inn & Suites), but definitely offers a unique option for enjoying steak.

River Rock Lodge has to have every cut of beef specially carved for them because of their unusual “hot rock grilling system” from Australia. Essentially, they keep 6 1/4” x 6 1/4 “lava rocks heated to 700 degrees in a special oven. When you order the “system”, they bring it out on a porcelain tray with onions, mushrooms and a garlic sauce. You then cook the meat yourself on the sizzling hot rock to your idea of perfection. Be warned, however. This is not a meal to have with the kids. For safety reasons, they will not bring the hot rock to any table where someone under 13 years of age is seated.

But River Rock Lodge is not a “one-trick-pony”. Their cuisine runs the gamut from Mexican to Italian to American BBQ, including a nice selection of seafood. Entrée prices range from $13 to $30.

One fascinating service they offer is “whatever you want” private party catering. They have no catering menu. With enough preparation time, they literally will create anything you ask for. They will fly in anything, from anywhere, for your party or reception. The mind boggles at the options that can mean. If you have the wherewithal, they have the will.

The relaxing lodge ambience rolls out from the dining room onto an outdoor patio with a pond and fountain, lighting and even a stage for parties or receptions. They have separate Lunch and Dinner menus. The lunch menu leans towards “in-n-out in 40 minutes” business lunch items while the dinner menu which shows up at 4pm is more extensive and relaxing.

River Rock Lodge has a full bar featuring 16 taps and specialty martinis. They are open 11am – 2am with a full menu until midnight. Visit them at 133 Coon Rapids Blvd. in Coon Rapids, MN 55433. Call 763-746-7000 for more information.
